Oliver Dunlap Recognized by Judicial Council and Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero for Work on Bench Bar Coalition’s Executive Committee

At the State Bar and Judicial Council’s recent annual conference, Bartko partner and shareholder Oliver Dunlap was recognized for his significant work with the Bench Bar Coalition—a statewide association of judges and leading attorneys whose mission is to enhance communication and coordinate activities with the state, local, and specialty bar associations on issues of common interest to the judicial branch. Oliver has served on the Executive Committee of the Coalition since August 2001, and has been involved in its legislative work, remote court proceedings working group, and various DEI and judicial independence initiatives. He is also active with the California Judges Association’s (CJA) Judicial Fairness Coalition, the Conference of California Bar Associations, and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA).

On the evening of July 17, 2023, the Honorable Beth Labson Freeman of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District for California, in Laatz v. Zazzle, Inc., et al., Case No. 22-cv-04844-BLF, issued a comprehensive twenty-five-page order resoundingly rejecting Defendant Zazzle, Inc.’s second attempt to dismiss Plaintiff Nicky Laatz’s claims that Zazzle stole three of her most popular fonts and the software that renders them, so that Zazzle could allow tens of millions of its customers and others to use the fonts without any compensation to Ms. Laatz.

San Francisco, CA – In a June 5, 2023 Order, only made available on the public docket late June 6, 2023, the Honorable Evelio Grillo of the Alameda Superior Court, in VHS Liquidating Trust, et al. v. Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, et al., Case Number RG21106600, issued a comprehensive Order resoundingly rejecting the Defendant Blues’ second attempt to dismiss the Plaintiffs’ claims.

Bartko Clients Win $680 Million Francesca Naify Case

On February 7, 2023, the San Francisco Superior Court entered its Statement of Decision and Judgment in favor of Bartko clients, the Co-Trustees of the Robert A. Naify Trust, and against Petitioner Christina Cortese. Cortese had sought as much as $680 million in community property damages on behalf of her deceased mother. The Court’s Statement of Decision rejected all of Ms. Cortese’s claims and damages, and Judgment has been entered for the Co-Trustees.
